two bicycles parked in grass, against verdant brush and clear blue skies. the one on the left is a blue Specialized, the one on the right a silver Motobecane. both are hard tail mountain bikes with street tires.

detail shot of the blue Specialized bicycle. it has a left side mirror, a bolted on cargo rack, blue bottle cages, and a rubberized phone mountdetail shot of the silver Motobecane. its rear wheel is covered down to the chain stays by a white piece of corrugated plastic, bedecked with stickers. its cargo rack attaches to the seatpost only, with no bolted connections to the chain stays or seat stays. it has no mirror, mismatched plastic bottle cages, disc brakes, and the same phone mount.
my dad bought this one new in 2004 from his local bike shop of choice, set up in a quonset hut type building, and for a time he rode it clear across town to work. I don't know how he did it, knowing the route he had to take. it's somehow put on even more miles since he passed it on to me in 2020, first as a spare and now as my primary.I bought this one in 2015 or 2016 from a different local bike shop secondhand, after my Schwinn department store bike was permanently and irreparably injured by a collision with a rental bike in Hilton Head. she was my primary until she got run over by the fuel truck at work in 2022, and though that only damaged the rear wheel (which I have since replaced at my own cost because work never reimbursed me for a work vehicle damaging it), she needs a bunch of accumulated TLC to get her back to being my main ride. I put the coroplast on so my panniers didn't catch on the spokes and wreck me which kept almost happening.

these are both roughly of the same vintage, early-mid 2000s hardtail mtbs, bought from bike shops so they're not department store cruft.
I want to get Swytch kits for them both, or other such front wheel kits. blue could do with a move to discs, but I'd have to replace both wheels for that, the frame is disc compatible but the wheels aren't.

if I had to guess, silver is more bitch house than blue

ah so it's more the "cheap/crappy bolt on parts" not the zip ties affixing them to things/things to them
yeah i wish silver's frame had eyelets for a proper rack, i'd almost try to find someone willing to weld nuts on so i could get a proper rack for it.
blue has a very similar kickstand, possibly the same model, i might have got them both from the local bike shop, which also had to get its top bit ziptied on.
