So, I have recently acquired the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards from June of 1994. I noticed that sucrose (aka sugar) was listed and had an exposure limit of TWA 10 mg per m cubed. Out of curiosity, I decided to look up what the exposure limit for sugar is now, and found out that it has stayed the same. Then I scrolled down.
It turns out, if you have a concentration of at least 45 g per m cubed of fine sugar dust in the air, it will explode. Now, this is obviously very difficult to do, but I am delighted at the possibility of using powdered sugar as an explosive. Either way, now you know that bakers are extremely dangerous given the right circumstances. Have fun with this information!
