Let's give them one last hurrah.

At some point in the early 2000s fandom crossed over from being primarily rooted in a speculative fiction concept of furries, which required some kind of scientifically plausible origin (they were genetically engineered, they were aliens, there was some kind of convergent evolution, etc) to 'my character looks this way because I like how it looks'... to add to the chorus here in the comments, I felt that shark OCs were the most striking indicator of this change: no one was pretending they had evolved into that shape; their anatomy was fantastical and not only was that fine, but it was unnecessary to devote mental energy to why they look that way.

(this is furries as opposed to toons, of course <3)

The same could be said about ears on shark fursonas, too. There was a time where I'd be all "look at this water sergal, lol" about them, but... it's fine? It's all fantasy animals at the end of the day, as long as it works for you it works.

Come to think of it, probably also why we've seen a loving resurgence of sparkledog OCs as of late.

I think all 3 have their place, and work best in certain styles of art. The real issue is when people try to claim any one of them is better than the others or gets after somebody for “lack of realism” or “overcomplicating things”

reminded of the time I was at a con and the TF meet got taken over by like three guys who refused to shut the fuck up about how much the love 90s and early-2000s werewolf movies and wouldn't accept any other kind and would just hijack the conversation and steer the conversation away any time anyone tried to talk about anything magical or fanastical because only science is believable

meanwhile I'm over here thinking that magical werewolves are more plausible and less immersion-breaking than trying to get my head around scientific werewolves

Had someone claim my 'sona was "Unrealistic", unprompted, because he's...six inches taller than a real life North American Grizzly on its hind legs?

Not gonna comment on the story behind him because it was made up lore improv'd on a stream LOL

Thinking about how I was making throwaway characters for some writing and wound up with, fatassed knife fetish having government funded shark femboy assassin and his doting to him but viciously aggressive with anyone else, muscly meat wall of a mother. They are a loving family of trained killers 🥰
And of course I got attached to them.
