The Skiffs' original planet is Sterilis; a planet far in the depths of space. Named as such because, despite being within a mostly-habitable range, it's VERY dry compared to Earth. Most of the landmass is dry deserts and canyons. There are pockets of plantlife near the coastline and ice caps, though.
Those rings are very icy! They make rocket launches difficult, but they make the night skies very pretty, as seen in the second image.

On a more meta-level, Sterilis is kind of a microcosm of southern california nostalgia. Beautiful deserts, sand-and-surf, a bustling car culture (seen as the skiffs themselves) and the like. Just with a more sci-fi spin!

Keying it to a state makes me wonder of other configurations. Massachusetts style Skiffs with salt worn heels and a bit of grime from long melted snow, even though it's summer. Dings and dents that could be buffed out but there's just gonna be more as soon as you get it fixed.

I can't relate to Californians and others who see a desert as comfy or nostalgic. I'm terminally New-England-brained and if there aren't a bunch of evergreen trees around the biome feels weird.

However, the art people produce along these lines is cool. Deserts are an aesthetic biome, just with vibes that are like "this feels like another planet" to me.

I was born and raised in Southern California, and I do like it here enough to base my frame (loosely) on a bird native to here. I love sunset beach neon megacity synthwave aesthetics. The only thing that I don't like is the car dependency, I am terminally transit/cycling/walkability coded.
