This is a very open-ended question, as there are multiple interpretations that produce different answers. I’ll explore a few of them in this post (and, as I’m writing, hopefully arrive at my Actual Answer).
The simplest interpretation to answer is “What’s the type of your favorite Pokémon?” This assumes that being a Pokémon type is achieved only by being a Pokémon, and that the Pokémon I’d want to be would be my favorite one. My favorite Pokémon is Luxray, making the answer to this question Electric.
A slightly different interpretation that makes one fewer assumption is “What’s the type of the Pokémon you’d most want to be?” I’m kinda not sure about this one, but thinking about my favorite Pokémon forms to take I think it’d probably be Normal type thanks to options like Eevee and Lopunny. Electric would still be on the table as well.
Without assuming that I need to actually be a Pokémon, the question becomes something like “If you could have powers themed after one of Pokémon’s types (or, in other words, be able to more or less use the moves of that type), which type would you choose?” No form changes or anything, just me gaining the ability to shoot fire or whatever I went with. This is one where I’m kind of undecided, so I’ll go over a few options.
Fighting would effectively just be superhuman strength and martial arts abilities, which would admittedly be pretty cool. I don’t know if I’d have any particular need for that but it’s certainly an option.
Psychic is one that kinda jumped out at me right away when considering this interpretation of the question, because it’d come with a bunch of abilities for both utility and offense. Telekinesis, telepathy, teleportation, things that don’t start with “tele” like clairvoyance and mind-reading… The problem is that it’d kinda be too much, I think? The future sight and mind reading stuff would probably just make me kinda sad. They do kinda slap the Psychic typing on stuff without them necessarily having each of those specific abilities, though, so maybe I could be one of those cases…
I think Fire is a really safe answer. Natural resistance to both heat and cold would be reeeaaally nice. The utilities and offensive strengths are also numerous, and quite flashy at that. Electric is in a similar boat.
My answer to this version of the question has gotta be Ghost type, though. That does not mean I’d be a ghost! Just a ghost type! For one thing, it reminds me heavily of Jujutsu Kaisen’s “cursed energy” power system, but also, it’d make me impervious to anything considered “Normal type”. Furthermore, “Normal type” things like ordinary people would be immune to my abilities, which I think would be incredibly helpful. I wouldn’t need to worry about hurting anyone most of the time!
So yeah, final answer is Ghost type. I end up as a Ghost type myself pretty infrequently… Oh, and by the way, for my own “canonical” magic abilities, I think the type that matches me best is Ice. It’s the type of magic I learned first, and therefore the kind I’m most proficient at. If I could’ve picked an element for that, it probably would’ve been electricity, but my tutors mostly used ice, so… there ya go :P
