I took this in September 8th, 2022, about 2.5 months before I joined cohost, so it never got posted here. This is still one of my favorite shots and idk, it feels like it should be here before cohost goes read-only. This was taken from the top of Larch Mountain (the Oregon one) and I am realizing that I probably missed the window for this shot this year😅. oh well, there's always next year. more details in the readmore
Taking the photo is mostly just being in the right place at the right time: a friend told me what day to be on top of Larch Mountain for the shot, but I think you can calculate it with apps like PhotoPills. Just make sure you expose for the moon so you can recover detail.
Processing-wise I remember really having to really fight darktable to get this shot to come out. You either have to pull the moon down or pull everything else up - darktable's Tone Equalizer does a great job of that up to about 4 stops, where it hard-limits you from going further. This was something like... 10 stops? I think? So I ended up stacking multiple Tone Equalizer modules to get the mountain and the moon to both be visible. This still is probably the most challenging edit I've done. Came out pretty nice though.
