got concerned for a second that it was coming from my cat Calamity as she'd just recently had some allergy/respiratory issues (that have since cleared up!) but it's not in sync with her breathing.

so i'm sitting her freaking out because what the fuck is this noise and i think, wait, i've got a game on pause right now, is it coming from the game? so i open up the volume controls on my other monitor and hit mute in the middle of one of the breathing noises and, sure enough, they stop.

in retrospect, i should have probably guessed this outright, considering the game in question is Silent Hill 2.
