whenever i do one of these marathons of like a particular movie series or franchise, occasionally I have to watch some sort of absolute garbage. I'll often jokingly lament, "Oh, I can't believe I have to watch this," to which concerned friends will say "You don't HAVE to, you could skip it" which ultimately results in me doubling down and needing to watch it more.

so if you really think about it me forcing myself to get through the absolute slog that is morbius, a film that i would describe as a vacuum of charm and taste, is really the fault of everyone that told me not to do it and i'm entirely without blame here

Y'know, sometimes when you're watching a movie that sucks and you come to a particularly awful scene, you wonder if there was any way it could have been salvaged. If maybe there had been better direction, or if someone else was cast as the character in question. But, like, realistically? No one could have made this line sound cool or intimidating, under any circumstances.

Watching Morbius is making me think of the common trope you see in a lot of superhero films where, if the hero in question isn't one of the more popular ones with a robust and well-known rogues' gallery, a lot of times you end up with their film's antagonist being "What if the hero... but an EVIL version?"

Like sometimes you have a hero that has a whole bunch of villains but maybe there's The One Villain that has like the most exposure, like Abomination for Hulk or Red Skull for Captain America. Other times you're dealing with a hero that's a little less in-the-limelight and so maybe it'll just make things a bit simpler to have the villain be a Dark Reflection. Like I don't know a single goddamn Ant-Man villain from the comics.

oh, and then there's "this hero's most well-known villain is a racist caricature so maybe we should avoid bringing them in until we find a better way to do it" and then you get obadiah stane in iron man 1

It's like... imagine if Spider-Man didn't have such a great group of villains and instead they had to make fuckinnnnn... Ben Reilly the antagonist in the origin story (though even then at least I know who Ben Reilly is).

Morbius kind of falls into the Ant-Man category where I don't know shit nor fuck about the character's comic history and thus couldn't tell you a single villain he's fought so, fuck it, let's just make the villain in the origin story another living vampire, who fuckin cares. do you fuckin care? of course you don't. i don't even know if "milo" is an actual character from the comics. who cares.
