i miss sven coop pre-3.0

i feel like that mod got some serious brainworms and identity crises after half-life 2 released and "i took five minutes to look and it's 100% impossible to make a sven coop for half-life 2" and then synergy ate their lunch and then it became super sour grapes, channeling that into "now the grunts will throw grenades back" and "every single animation has been replaced to look even cooler but it also broke all the other multiplayer models that were previously just drop-in"

it's supposed to be goofy. that's the plot and the point. but then it became technical flash and complexity. and then synergy was also like, weirdly tryhard cool??? just not a fun thing to play and fuck up at, they both got that league/dota "IF YOU'RE MAKING A SINGLE MISTAKE IN THIS ROTE THING THAT I'VE PLAYED A BILLION TIMES I'M GOING TO FIND YOU AT HOME AND CALL YOUR MOTHER SLURS" disease (if not weird cops-having-a-tea-party roleplay that garry's mod is now)

wheres the SOUL

it's also why i like action half-life more than the specialists. sorry!!!!!!

also god to me it was weird going from all the cool and different mods of half-life to the mods of half-life 2 where i went from "oh, plan of action is at least... a start? surely hl2/source mods will get better than this" to "this is the lost decade of modding" to "modding is dead isn't it, replaced with billions of tiny and possibly incompatible bits and putting all the customization and repair on the end user, especially after major updates"

the death of complete mods (modpacks and collections do not count sorry!!!!) and dedicated servers being killed in favor of matchmaking with strangers feels not great to me!!!

in reply to @bobskunk's post:

i remember enjoying obsidian conflict more than syngergy for that reason - it had a bunch of weird extra stuff, like an NPC arena mode with custom NPCs that you could place bets on. if you lost your bet you had to fight in the arena the next round, and your buds online could bet for/against you and drop powerups in the arena

I've seen multiple people go "I spent 8 hours putting together a modlist for [game], and now I'm not interested in playing it anymore"
