As the sand slid off Acute's back, he coughed up more of the fine particles and pushed harder to force his shaking hands and knees to steady him. After another cough, he cried out. "Obtuse!? Rangle!?"
"I'm good!" came a muffled voice from a nearby pile of sand. A single pink arm rose from one of the many tiny hills of the miniature desert surrounding them. The thin fingers curled into a thumbs up gesture and Acute watched his twin sister Obtuse pull herself up to sit up straight. She looked around with her good blue and red eye. "Holy... did Rangle do this?"
"It looks like it...." Acute answered, standing to his feet. Fine sand surrounded the two bunny boss monsters and if he hadn't known what was going on, he would have thought someone was playing a prank on them, dumping all of this sand in front of their apartment building, in the square of their otherwise sleepy and unassuming residential square. And yet....
"Where's Rangle?" Obtuse asked, pushing herself to her feet before dusting off her lap.
Acute squinted his good eye. "Over there?" He could see someone standing some distance away from him and his twin. He sniffed the air, but the area was saturated in sand and blood and... something else he couldn't quite put his thin finger on. All he and Obtuse could do was approach the figure with caution, only relaxing when the familiar long ears of their older brother blew away from his imposing silhouette.
Rangle stood straight, but his shoulders shook with each haggard breath. Cuts decorated his face, arms, chest and stomach, some crying a thin line of blood. His clothes, once pristine and pressed, were now shreds of cloth flying in the wind, resembling windsocks in a harsh breeze.
For a long moment, he didn't speak, just breathed, one deep inhale, one long exhale, inhale, exhale, one after another. His eyes stayed focused in front of him, narrowed and just a bit bloodshot from the wind pelting him with sand. One hand was still curled up in a fist. He was expecting something, even though everything was all over.
...Right?
"Rangle?" Acute called. "Where... where is he...? Where's Ryan?"
After a long pause, Rangle answered, voice low and gritty. "I beat him. He's gone. He is only carbon now."
