Cohostians kindly directed me to FreeTube (Win/Mac/Linux) and NewPipe (Android) after I posted my work-arounds for watching YouTube videos via MPC-HC and YT-DLP several months back. (Loading up a video into MPC-HC with YT-DLP is still a great way to save a copy locally without having to go through some seedy website, but, different discussion.)

Honestly, I can't recommend FreeTube enough. It loads lightning quick, has a huge number of distraction-free customization options ranging from disabling comments to turning off specific bits of information and recommendations, and you can import your existing YouTube subscriptions as well as switch between subscriptions for specific channels. Also, no ads. Plus you can run things through Invidious instances.

(Sidenote, I've also been using DuckDuckGo for years and it's great.)

adding to this: if you've ever used Google Keep (note app), you might swap it out for obsidian.md. it easily fills the same role (write notes on any platform) but is so much better in every way (for one, you can find your notes again after you write them)
