Cohost, bless their heart, seems to be trying their hardest, but discoverability here is... low.

I gather that some of this is intentional as they aim for a lower key, less competitive, less popularity-driven community.

All the same, posts aren't searchable, people are only searchable by username, and there are no algorithms that display trending topics or make suggestions based on your interests. New people have a hard time connecting with others, and our main option is to either connect outside of cohost and exchange handles, or do mad hashtagging into the void.

So hashtagging it is.

If science, science communication, and science writing are among your interests, please comment here, and that way the world can find you.

The big search engines seem to be indexing Cohost, though coverage is still spotty. Bing seems to have more of the site indexed than Google⁉️

My experience has been that after a few posts people are finding me and vice versa. I’m just here to have fun and maybe learn something, so the serendipity is fine.

hiiii I'm Jake (he/him) and I currently work at an HIV lab (that also does covid vax work) that works on clinical trials. But I'm a big hobby insect and spider guy hoping to go to grad school for entomology (esp something related to reproduction and/or behavior) sometime soon. Currently tho I love sharing pictures of the insects and spiders I see, and of my pet tarantula and dairy cow isopods. I can also be found @ tarantuladad on twitter and tarantula_dad on mastodon.

I myself am no scientist, but I’ve always appreciated the scientific method as being our best and sometimes only tool for getting as close to the truths of the universe as we possibly can.

Now, with the pandemic and the flood of misinformation and disinformation it has brought with it, more than ever before I have found myself wanting to seek out science communicators who do their best to fight the good fight against that mis/disinformation. It’s mostly for my own sanity, I guess.

Hey! Finally got through the waitlist. Was unfortunately caught right in the middle of the huge wave of new people last month, so I only got approved yesterday.

I talk biotechnology stuff, often CRISPR, and any other cool discoveries in biology I feel like covering.
