I've never known what I'm doing and I'm not going to start now

Destination: Cyberpunk 2077

Starting something from scratch is tough. It’s a leap forward into an unknown ocean, one where you swim amongst a sea of questions: “Why did I start this account? Will I be compelled enough to stick around for the long run? Will my ramblings be interesting enough?”

Despite these thoughts, here we are: me writing, and you reading. Being a ludological traveller was a desire I’ve had for a long time, but it was only until I found myself on Cohost did that desire become a new beginning.

The grime of ‘Night City’ was a beginning for me too; finally having the capabilities to embark on demanding new journeys, I decided my first would be in a world whose creator waved every red flag to dissuade me. I had no love for CD Projekt Red, I had no love for Cyberpunk 2077, I had no love for Night City, but I had a desire to get lost.

Being locked indoors during a worldwide pandemic, my options for night walks in empty cities were non-existent. So, like many other individuals, I turned to the digital world for my escapism, which then landed me in the much anticipated Night City: home to the shattered expectations of millions, and built on the broken promises of scumbags. I need not discuss the multiple controversies Cyberpunk 2077 found itself in, its a tale many are all too familiar with. I had a suspicion that it was a game that wouldn’t deliver, and even if we were to ignore that, I couldn't turn a blind eye to the questionable presentation of transgenderism from CDPR.

Yet here I was, in this cold city, wandering these rain-licked streets, searching for an escape. For a moment or two, Night City was that; an escape. I was craving for a night-drive, riding around aimlessly as I let the phosphorescent-lit city overwhelm me in vibes of comfortable isolation, with the blaring tunes of the radio station to soundtrack the ambience. I was fooled into the believability of Night City, completely immersed, or I would have been. You can thank the cynically tasteless sex that’s plastered all over the billboard ads for that.

I never had love for this city, but these lonely nights of biking about with no destination in mind, they were compelling. They were a slice of nostalgia during a non-functional world; an encore to an adolescent pastime that was soon to be lost to the transition into adulthood. Being a @VideoGameTraveller may not be the most compelling idea for a gimmick account, much like how Cyberpunk was not a compelling start for brand new hardware. But there’s something to be found here, something beautiful, something worth capturing. So, let this be the beginning of that something.

I started a gimmick account by the name of @VideoGameTraveller. It's an idea I had bouncing around for a long time, but was only made possible thanks to the format of Cohost.

The elevator pitch is this; an ongoing diary of various thoughts and observations of places, but for video games. A pretentious verion of a travelling blog for gamers

Hope it's up your alley
