originally referred to the combination coffin/oven that witches used to bake naughty little children. these were expensive and typically required more funds than a single old woman could make by selling potions/hexes/lizards/etc, so eventually the term grew to refer collectively to a group of witches who pooled their resources to buy and maintain a single coven
