I've been reading Shadow of the Torturer and it has some moments that make me feel similar to how I did when I failed to get far in David Copperfield back in my school days. Severian is just doing the weird road trip of mundanities and coincidences in a setting that is more interesting to me. Am I nuts for thinking this?
