First of all, Dracula can cross running water. We have to admit that's pretty canonical. It's in Bram Stoker's original book (and now adapted into a movie) that Dracula stowed away on the Demeter and basically played Among Us with the crew the whole way.

But maybe Dracula's just badass like that. Suppose you get turned into a not very powerful vampire, and you can't cross any amount of water anymore, not even if you're on a bridge. No lakes, no rivers, no creeks, and definitely no seas or oceans. Where can you get to as a vampire, and how do you get there?

There's going to be major limitations. If you're in New England, for example, you can't leave the area bounded by the ocean, the Erie Canal, the Great Lakes, and the St. Lawrence River.

yeah I think I found the circuitous vampire-accessible route between Durham and Chapel Hill. The roads all cross creeks, so at a minimum, the trip requires you to cross these woods between two isolated neighborhoods.

But, note the path that appears to exist between them. Maybe the vampires are already doing this

Does it still count as a river or creek if you dam it or fill it in? If not, feels like that's the long-term goal for any non-Dracula vampire to get out from being stuck on an island.

...also means vampires can take over parts of NYC but otherwise are COMPLETELY STUCK.

Then there's the question of what it means to not be able to cross water. Do they die or just go catatonic? Could a vampire hop on a train, go to sleep as they go over the river, and then wake up on the other side? Do they not do this because there are little old lady vampire hunters with wooden knitting needles, who are just waiting for a vampire to nod off on the train, so they can stake them?
