So I guess I'm supposed to say something? I guess?
Most folks reading this are probably aware that I'm disabled. My legs don't work right and every say is a challenge even at the most basic levels. In fact, some of y'all newer folks may not know this, but I spent last year in the hospital. I was completely unable to walk or sit up or stand for the majority of the year.
I have since relearned how to walk, though it is extremely challenging. I live alone, and while it's a blessing in some ways to be able to inhabit my space in my own way, it does put everything on my shoulders and my legs in particular. Some days standing to cook or clean or other activities for prolonged periods is impossible, and I need to get groceries delivered rather than go to the store directly. (I cannot walk around a store for an hour straight. It is genuinely impossible.)
This all is why I often ask for help. All these things are expensive, as is rent, and for those of you who don't know, in Ontario the maximum rental assistance is $582 a month. That, you may be thinking, is ridiculous, and you would be correct. It is just a hair more than half my rent, and that is supposed to be enough to keep a roof over my head.
There are additional allowances for food and necessities from disability, which all go to paying rent and bills, leaving next to nothing for actual necessities.
So, this Disability Pride Month, I'm going to ask for help again, overcoming the obstacles that are put in place by the system that is ostensibly meant to keep me alive, yet while I was hospitalized, the information packet I was given in my room was literally bookmarked to the section on MAID (Medical Assistance In Dying).
