I wanted to share some thoughts about making music, and hopefully making changes to my process to make my music more interesting.
I can't say for certain, but I feel like my music has become simpler than it used to be. Probably because most of the music I listen to nowadays are chiptunes (NES and Gameboy specifically). I'm listening to NES music as I write this post.
It could also be that I'm not giving the song enough time to grow before I release it. Songs like Walking in Circles have had a decade+ to grow into what they became. I still consider the original Walking in Circles my best album.
It takes me roughly 1-2 hours to write a song. My process is very efficient, and I have so much experience that helps me write quickly. I reach a point where I feel the song is done, but I ask myself "what if I spent another 1-2 hours on it? how would it sound?". I've yet to answer my own question, because I run out of things to do with the song.
So that's probably 2 or 3 things I need to go over in my mind. I need to add more instruments to my music, stuff that pops up here and there to give the listener more than just the melody to follow. I need to give my music more time to grow into something more than what I've been writing. And I feel I need to spend more time overall on the song, which would assist the first two points.
I'm at 989 songs, and I'm going to write what I hope to be a very special album. I want the songs to be more than just fun compositions. It will be at least 10 tracks. November 9th is the 26 year mark of my father's death, and I usually write a song for him. That would make the album 11 tracks.
I'll probably plan out what I want to do. In the meantime, if you've made it this far in my post, please listen to (or keep listening to) my music when you have the time. Your thoughts are important to me.
