My original music

This is just a small rant. It's because of my own thinking, and not because of anything anyone said or did.

It bothers me that there could be people out there that dislike artists for using samples (legally) in their music. I mostly use drum samples and FX I bought since it's my weakest areas of composition, but I'll toss in the occasional bass line or synth sample (most notably is the album Universe of Dreams where I used a lot of musical samples as an experiment).

I wonder how these same people feel about artists like Daft Punk or Hip Hop artists that sample entire song portions for their beats. I like Daft Punk a lot myself.

What are your thoughts on using samples in music?

It is ok, I feel like it is a tool in a Toolbox. Can be good, can be bad. For instace, Hideki Naganuma's Sonic Rush OST is very heavily sample based and it is stupid crazy good

I don't really mind.
I guess it can lead to some misunderstandings if a sample is the strongest part of the song, the bit with the most hummable melody or the refrain you want to sing and from ignorance you think it's from the sampling artist instead of the the samplee.
Still I don't think I mind, especially when it's from genres where it's pretty clear that no, the bald dude who does the scratches doesn't somehow have the voice of a gospel singer ...

Our current understanding of how art ownership works is messed up in a lot of ways, and a lot of that is due to the really bad meshing between art and commerce.

We have a rich history of heavily borrowed art that we all benefit from, that has grown and developed art in all its forms. The idea that no one should be allowed to do something I did without my express permission, to me, is a very narrow view of art.

Now, I feel compelled to add to this since I commented just before about the issue with Filip Miucin a few minutes ago. Permission should be given in today's world because that's what people expect. Although art has been historically more loosely owned, it hasn't always been a very ethical process. However, everyone borrows. All good ideas are inspired from something. That's not the same as plagiarism.
