Okay so like, we stopped by a garden center that's a <10minute walk from our house and they had a bunch of clearance ferns for sale (including the native variety of licorice fern, which we were ecstatic over). But we wandered over to the regular priced ones and found these very sad looking (but very cool looking) jurassic-esque ferns. The garden center lady couldn't identify them, they had no label and no info tabs hidden in the dirt so she ended up pulling them. When we went to check out she gave me the most waterlogged and stressed looking one for free since I mentioned I don't mind rehabbing plants! Yay!

But then came identification... and IDENTIFYING FERNS IS SO HARD. THERES SO MANY OF THESE FUCKERS THEY BEEN AROUND SINCE BEFORE HUMANS EXISTED. THEY'RE LIKE IF MUSHROOMS DECIDED TO PACK UP THIER BAGS AND START GROWING GREEN LEAVES, LIKE 'FUCK IT, THERES 100 VARIETIES OF THIS ONE GENUS AND 200 SUB VARIETY OF SPECIES BECAUSE WE HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TIME TO GROW INTO A MILLION SUBSETS OF THE SAME THING

Anyways, google lens and AI search can only get you so far, but luckily the internet is a treasure trove and garden centers only stock so many 'common' varietys. The first two pictures are the sad looking one I got for free (it already has 5 new fiddleheads so it'll thrive soon), the next is a healthier one we found in the garden center, and the last is an online photo!!! BOOM this lil one is a 'Dwarf Crisped Golden-scaled Male Fern' or 'Dryopteris affinis Crispa Congesta' a fucking MOUTHFUL

and btw, Male Fern is not the gender but literally the common name! because it looks like a lady fern but is 'bigger, stronger, more masculine than the delicate lady fern' which is some non-sense. Apparently the rhizomes of the regular male fern were used to treat tapeworm back in the day, neat! I love this fern it looks so fucking COOL and apparently swirls outward as it grows C:
