Found out that "faggot", "fascist", and "fajita" are cognates (that's the word that means they share the same origin, something I also didn't know)
If I had a nickel for every time the etymology of the name of an authoritarian regime from twentieth century Europe had a connection with the name of delicious Mexican food, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
I'm trying to think of delicious Mexican foods with European etymologies, but none of them have any visible connection to 20th-century authoritarianism in Europe. So far I have
- taco, from old French "tache" meaning bolt or nail
- quesadilla, ultimately from PIE "kwat-" meaning to ferment, via Latin "caseus", cheese
- burrito, via an especially silly etymology tracing back to Greek "πῦρ" meaning fire
...did @NoelBWrites just make this up to drive us crazy??
