if you work with the public it should be just a standard thing that you don't have to use your real name. like you can if you want, but it should be totally normalized that if your waitress's nametag says "Melissa" and that's how she introduces herself, she's Melissa to you and that's all you need to know

...this is one of those opinions I had when I was proto-trans and obviously wanting to explore my options in a "what if nobody had gendered pronouns" kinda confused way but I'm still standing by this one. it's not just sex workers that get people doing the "see you after your shift, Melissa" creepery to them.

also, if you make less than $50/hr and your boss puts your real last name on your nametag, your boss should be legally required to eat the nametag

Back in my pre-transition days I worked at a place where the rule was you had to wear a nametag while you worked. If you forgot your own it was perfectly acceptable to use whatever one was lying around in the break room, as long as you were ready to answer to it. I was almost a bearded Jessica for a day but I chickened out.

I have worked multiple public-facing jobs where you could put whatever you wanted on your nametag, but then anything computer-generated (records of who took in an order, who did the work on the order, etc etc- all printed on receipts in some cases!) just slapped the name on your paycheck on there with absolutely no way to change it.

my bartender ex-colleague regularly used a fake name and with good reason, it was a fairly seedy place with seedy customers. i never worked the night shift out front so i didn't really needed this, but was tempted still
