Honestly my favorite part of this is that Canada has an extremely not-open border. It's very much not a place you can just show up without being "good enough"

In addition to the blurb above, I'm a recovering mathematician, Jewish, and autistic as fuck--those didn't alliterate
Sometimes I write poems, mostly in English and Spanish
I feel weird putting my age in my bio but I am in fact a Grown Up if you were worried

i only ever skim the front page of reddit w/o an account, and it's interesting seeing certain takes get spread at volume in a way that feels artificial. unmasked bloodthirsty pro-israel and "immigration bad, cmon guys i'm leftist as anyone but we're losing on this" seem to be the biggest two right now
So... there's a weird thing here where some of these people are right because our immigration policies are absolutely being exploited by corps to have a constant stream of cheap labour from other countries and depress wages, AND most levels of our governments have been so captured by the real estate industry that the very idea that government should do anything to materially improve the levels of housing in this country is politically dead. There's also the issue of many people who immigrate here being sold the promise that a student visa is a way to guarantee PR instead of just being a pathway towards it and then getting rightfully upset that their immigration consultant (who in many cases they had to pay far too much money to use the services of) lied to them & their families.
The problem is that many of the people who hate immigration are racist and it's very hard to separate the actual criticisms of the ways our government has been abusing immigrants and the temporary foreign worker policies from those who just hate brown people.
I mean...is it that hard to separate? If your solution is "stop allowing brown people in" that's racist, if it's "allow people in without corporate sponsorship" they're probably fine
In that "Immigration is bad and ruining the country" is a statement I see a lot, and I stuggle to find out how many people are saying so due to racism (probably most, sadly) and how many are actually critical of the problems with immigration policy.
Also it's less 'corporate sponsorship' and more 'student visas being issued for students to attend largely fake instutions and diploma mills who then need to take jobs to support themselves (due to paying extremely high tuition fees because Canadian higher education is severely underfunded)'
Well if someone thinks that "Immigration is bad", rather than "current policy is unfair to immigrants" that's a pretty clear sign to me.
