Hearing "this is the internet, people will be mean to you" from the person who is actively being mean is so gross. It reminds me of parents who say "life's not fair" instead of just, like, treating their children better

also like...just have to say this behavior is so fuckin wack to see especially after the backlash you got for an image that was objectively way less confrontational than directly telling people to kill themselves. ik it's coming from two totally unrelated groups but it's wild seeing the leap from people justifying one unhealthy extreme to the other

you are so right about this. its bizarre. and it's so clear that it's just about being able to do what they want bc not only do they not want consequences, but they are lashing out at ppl like you who just for expressing that it sucks. they want freedom from even criticism.
i have a hypothesis, as someone who spent many years on tumblr. i can kind of understand how one might develop this attitude towards harrassing other users when their main online space is really poorly moderated and moderated in a blatantly discriminatory way. Their behavior makes slightly more sense as a learned response to being constantly surrounded by and vulnerble to "enemies", both real (like actual TERFs) and imagined (people who disagree with them about an obscure fandom discourse). Its maladaptive, for sure, as evidenced by the fact that they are so attached to it they are refusing to give up the behavior when entering an environment where they have no obvious enemies they can justify hurting.

The thing that's unbelievable is that they would come to cohost, a website with effective, human-run moderating, that is generally unflinching in banning obvious bigotry, and immediately try to drum up some enemies so they can continue to hurt people. Its baffling that they would outwardly state they want to change the culture to be meaner. It really seems like they learned to like hurting "bad" people so much that, in the absence of any people they could have seen as "bad", ie, in a MUCH SAFER environment where they don't have to fight, they are instead innovating new broader definitions for "bad" so they can keep getting the dopamine rush from hurting "bad" people. It's like they don't know how to recognize, let alone exist in, an environment where they are (comparitively) much safer.

it honestly reminds me a bit of how attempts at creating right-wing "anti-woke" social media platforms fail spectacularly, because getting what those kind of ppl want out of social media requires the presence of enemies they can victimize. the specific ppl arguing that they should be allowed to directly tell ppl on this site to kys are like, the symbiotic counterpart to right-wing trolls. They don't seem to know how to function on a social media platform without them.

honestly at this point i am thinking moderation might be a bit too human, i've sent out a bunch of reports on all these people and the account that SB'd me is still there (but the post isn't) and rita's SB is still up. i am concerned!

but yes, i said in a discord server that on tumblr there's this whole cycle encouraging sticking your neck out, getting a bunch of positive and negative attention, getting a bunch of follows out of sympathy and wow so brave, and finding your tribe a little more and gaining favor/kromer/whatever with them as your account slowly becomes Big and you mold yourself into a pariah. this is actually exactly why i never want conversation tree browsing on here. rita bitches about posts from tumblr she saw on her extremely unhealthy lurker account that make her angry (all of them from transmasc people, HMMM!) and if people Dare disagree with her she can blow it up into a big thing, get more positive attention from the Crowd the post was originally meant to CJ with, and sort of reify her Brand as an Attacked Victim, and contribute to the echo chamber by wrapping the poison pills of toxicity in a much louder and more distracting message that everyone else is out to Get their corner of the internet, and in this way subtly making it more toxic, raising the bar of what is acceptable.

it's all a big accountability evasion machine to "protect" the ideas and anyone who subscribes to them. that evolved in a jungle wherein there's no consensus accountability anyway (neither via moderation nor via community "mono"culture- i know people don't like the idea of cohost having a "mono"culture but pretty much every site does to some extent, and ours has Better Social Media as part of it). (pardon the vulgarity) as long as you're jerkin', it's workin'. the grain of truth "trans women disproportionately face harassment and over-scrutinization on most of the internet" seems to have grown bilaterally outwards into "criticizing trans women (who agree with our ideology) is inherently malicious, meant to justify provocation into further acts to criticize with the end goal of harassing or punishing trans women" and "only a transmisogynist would disagree with our ideology" in a self-reinforcing way

yeah it's just... really fucking uncomfortable to see shit like this happening here? one of the many, many reasons i left twitter was because i didn't like seeing people constantly saying vile shit to each other, and to have that kind of shit come here does not feel good. it's hard to word. it's gross that being so vile has become so normal on the internet.

plus ive seen people use the excuse of "she's going through a hard time so its ok for her to do this" and its... not a good fucking reason? i've been through a lot, not going to talk about it because it's very personal, but it's more than some could imagine and i've never decided to go and tell people to hurt themselves. i don't get it, maybe i'm too autistic or something to understand that line of thinking.

this shit needs to get nipped in the bud. it shouldn't fucking happen here. the bullshit toxicity is why i left twitter and i don't want it to repeat again.
