one of the interesting thing about keeping mice as pets is that for the price of a moderately nice car I could custom order a litter of mice with a doubled lifespan, enhanced strength, enhanced problem solving abilities, docile temperament, and resistance to numerous diseases. also they could glow in the dark if I wanted. we know so much about the mouse genome and can do so many interesting things with it.

and yet instead i have these two randomly generated little gremlins

Matthias is neutered! That's why he can share a cage with Cornflower without making 1000 additional mice. He hasn't had any complications from it.

However he was kind of an exceptional case (the animal shelter had a huge surrender of mice, and intact male mice have to be housed solo--they'll breed with females and fight with other males--so it's harder to manage large numbers of them). Neutering mice is not commonly done, because it is more difficult and risky than the same procedure on larger animals, and it's harder to find a veterinarian who will do it.
