Turns out I was able to first-try him. Oops! Probably helps that I used Shelter (ELF that permanently halves damage taken) before I reached him, but I didn't go below half health anyway, so I'd have been fine.

Not sure why the stream went down twice, but I'll have to stitch together the VoDs before I put them on YT I suppose. I did have fun perusing through the concept art and infodumping, though (but I think everyone left by then)

Anyway, I FINALLY BEAT ZERO 1 ON NORMAL MODE!!!! AND I FIRST TRIED THE MOTHERFUCKING FINAL BOSS, WHO WAS WHY I DIDN'T BEAT IT IN 2011 IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!! Which means that on Monday I'll be starting up Zero 2, which has the bitchin'est opening to a game I can ever recall, holy shit. Really fuckin' excited to get to that. See ya then!
