it occurs to me now that people who played on the 3DS (or with quality-of-life hacks) might not have ever experienced this - and that's probably a good thing, i think the biggest reason the water temple has a bit of a reputation is that the focus and pacing get kinda messed up by constantly having to hit the menu like this for a basic movement option :P
