Code Shifter: Developed by A.R.C. is a 2D side-scrolling platformer/brawler (with a little touch of Game Dev Story) that seemed to come-and-go real quick at the start of 2020. It involves debugging a game from the inside using a character that can transform into pixelized heroes from other Arc System Works franchises, including Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Double Dragon and Kunio-kun.
When you transform, not only do you get to see these fighters redrawn in cute Neo Geo Pocket style sprite art, you get some equally cute and very faithful Game Boy style demakes of various GG/BB themes. No nasty GGX: Advance samples, and way more competent than the Wonderswan GG Petit themes.
In fact, they're so faithful that you can overlay them on the original songs with no modification and It Just Works™. You get these very Anamanaguchi'd Daisuke Ishiwatari tracks that tickle my brain in a unique way.
Unfortunately, these demakes don't cover their entire source tracks, they just loop the main hook and verse. The sound credits for Code Shifter include Syun Yasukawa and Tatsunori Tajiri as director and producer, respectively, with composers listed as Mamoru Mori, Katsumi Ishi, Sawaka Kani and Yoshitaka Suzuki. There's no specific notes for who might have done the chiptune porting, though.
I've posted a few more of my favorite combos after the break.
(Note: I have not balanced these for headphone usage)
⬆️ That chip+guitar harmonization in the solo: that's what you get me for my birthday if you're at a lack for ideas.
