Not Necessarily a Bad Thing™
Hardly anyone is here and I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. I would love to return to more long form content that can easily be shared with friends. I miss the days of blogs dearly; when people cared about the profundities and minutiae of their friends' lives. Before engagement was a thing and ones self-worth was measured in likes and retweets conveniently pushed to your phone in an conspicuous notification banner persisting until you gave it a little tap to investigate.
Yes, the content on sites like LiveJournal could be a little cringe, but I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. That shared shame is a reminder. It is what keeps us humble and prevents the often self-righteous and overinflated egos that sites like Twitter encouraged.
I don't know. Maybe that's just me. It's been a long time since I've shared anything like this and I'm a very different person now than I was then.
Ideas
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Privacy Filters | A way to mark posts in such a way that they are only available to a subset of one's followers. Perhaps that is what the sub-account dropdown presently found in the upper righthand corner is for. You create a sub-account and invite your present set of followers to follow. I'm not sure if I like the opt-in model VS the author crafting the filter by hand. Awkwardness may abound "editing" it later, if only temporarily. It feels fragile. |
| YouTube Embeds | A way to embed a link to a YouTube video such that it displays inline would be nice. |
| Replies | An extremely concise way to reference other posts indicating yours is a reply to the information contained therein. Perhaps not a FULL inline copy of the original post, but some sort of overlapped and offset stack showing a portion of the post that the current one is replying to. |
| Collapsible Posts | Like old LiveJournal cuts. |
I'm also not sure what this drop down in the upper right corner does-- is that to create sub-accounts linked to one email address? How do I delete/remove them? Is this a way of hacking on the aforementioned private posts? (Just create artfulreggie-filter-a, make it private and limit who can follow? Not very intuitive. But what do I know.)
In the Meantime...
Don't mind me if I test out some features here. I'm a very curious person who is never content with the status quo in my tools. So don't mind me if I make a bit of a mess in all two of your timelines. Let me know if it's obnoxious. 😄
I also plan to just sit on this account for a while. See how the dust settles and move from there.
