Not only can SARS-CoV-2 attack and kill neurons β€” it can make neurons fuse without killing them. This might explain some of its weirder neurological effects, as this means it's potentially causing independent neural circuits to be bound up with each other.

I swear our broader culture somehow has no concept of permanent disability being, like, a thing that just happens to people. same reason they make people stand while doing retail jobs, just a different expression

I wonder if this helps explain anosmia vs parosmia. Sometimes olfactory neurons fuse and stop working (no sense of smell). Sometimes they fuse and combine pathways (everything smells like garbage).

I'm glad we're continuing to learn this stuff (better than not learning it), but damn this sucks.
