playing quake 1 on nightmare with the copper mod because well i might as well with quake 2 being out. it doesnt capture the sheer maximalism of doom but damn does it come close to its own sort of blistering brutality

yea, that's why I've always preferred quake over doom. quake excels at simultaneously making you feel very powerful and vulnerable at the same time. quake's weapons almost all feel great to use, but they're also all kind of shit? it's great stuff I love it 12/10
at this rate it might overtake doom which i cant believe im saying. it captures an almost hotline miami-esque quality where they make up for lowered enemy count by making each one count to where i find myself in so much more of an adrenaline having to quickly assess and deal with encounters.
if doom felt like a fun romp of a power fantasy where you mow down dozens, quake has me sprinting down corridors and twitching around corridors out of a fear that even the revival shooters like Dusk havent fully captured outside of specific moments.
The trent reznor soundtrack and it being partially called a horror game always seemed like an aesthetic grouping but i Get it. and i love it.
(then again this could be the copper mod turning everything up a notch and then capping my health at 50 which. its the little things.)
it pains me to say it but yea copper's version of Nightmare mode is way way better than the original game. turret monsters are super easy to exploit and half the time it winds up being easier than Hard. especially at 50 health, every monster matters. the most common enemies (ogres and... fiends? I think?) are serious threats just about every time.
also yea Trent's soundtrack/sound design elevates the game immensely. there's a reason it defined my taste in music forever lmao.
also episode 4 is the best one by far and I'll die on this hill
