i hope everyone trying out nethack today see some kind of new joy in trying out traditional roguelikes beyond "haha it kills you in funny ways game". this is actually how i started out in the genre but it quickly became an obsession for actual experimentation and interesting playstyles among variants. trust me in saying that you're only seeing the very edges of how many funny ways you can die, nethack is notorious for this but there are plenty others with something as simply as angband where you teleport out of a dangerous situation only to end up two inches away from a dragon's maw, or to the even more unfair of Iter Vehemens ad Necem (IVAN) where winning is always joking refereed to as a bug and even the little hedgehogs that roam about can take an entire limb if not your life.
Seconding this! Nethack was how I got into roguelikes and solidified them as one of our favorite genres :3!
You might wanna change your system clock today though. For no reason!!!
I can vouch for IVAN in particular as having some amazing death potential - I once got kicked in the groin by a unicorn (You feel happy. came up in the message log right afterwards) and then lost my last hit point to a fluffy little bunny after a polymorph gone wrong.
i cannot fully express the volume of vomit that will be involved in IVAN if you choose to play it, most of it unintentional and more importantly the few times where it's very beneficial.
