like, lots of people don't like the sound of their own voice and don't seem to realize that it's possible to improve how their own voice sounds (both to themselves and to others)

To make an analogy, it's extremely acceptable and normal in our culture that if you don't like the way your body looks you might exercise or something. However, when people don't like the sound of their own voice they just throw up their hands and assume that it's an immutable fixture of their life … but it's not!

You can train your voice in the same way you train your own body and instead of just tolerating your own voice you can actually produce a voice you like for a change.

This is especially true for cis people, who (likely) don't have to train as much to produce a voice they will be happy with compared to, say, trans women trying to feminize their own voices.

Cis people who don’t even know I’m trans are always complimenting me on my voice and I tell them it’s cuz I worked for a call center. Lots of cis people who work in certain trades and performance arts do train their voices. But they don’t think to unless they are those thinfs

I've brought this up before to cis people who've complained about their own voices. they have a lot of concerns about voices being authentic and there's a lot to unpack there; obviously trans people have to confront that directly, but cis people can get away with mostly ignoring it

a few days ago i was with my grandparents and they started asking me about what accents they had because they were insecure about it

being me, i told them the truth that i knew they would not like, and they were like well there is nothing we can do about that

and i said, i do not think there is anything wrong with your accent, but uhm you definitely can if you really want to

i was so confused that they thought they had no control over the sound coming out of their mouths
