Thank you very much for the phantom crane fly - this was the second of two bugs that I saw when I was young and nobody believed me that they were real. I saw it flying around and it was bizarre - the way it holds its legs out, like the arms of a snowflake, and its wings totally invisible.
The other one that I saw was the beautiful Pelecinid Wasp.
I'm glad to have helped you find the name of a very cool bug :D I read somewhere forever ago that their feet might look like that bc they have little air pockets in them to stabilize them when they hover
