I’m not enough of a toku head to speak about this in a qualified voice, but I love the almost guerrilla handheld style and rapid cutting in the action scenes. It takes what’s already there in what I’ve seen of the first episode of the original and leans into it really hard. It’s not so much gritty as it is hyperreal
They did the thing where someone jumps and in a single cut they’re in a completely impossible place. Cus you know that’s the best you can do conveying a live actor leaping up a dam without cg. love it

it slaps so hard. I love how like, Anno it is, with shit like the black locus just, conceptually, being the mass produced EVA.
