I haven’t ruminated about OSE lately considering that once I stopped being in the phase where I’m building Midge and assigning her gear, she’s shipped, whatever happens now happens. That’s what I like about the fighter

I have been having a tricky time with her gimmick about keeping her main hand empty for spears and javelins. I gave her a bastard sword (a Carcass Crawler addition) and forewent a shield thinking that it’d be good for the flexible image I was going for (plus my hyperfixation on having a spear in case of zombies and the like meant a free offhand). This was mixed.

The bastard sword is a great weapon, better than the two hander in my book. The gm actually wavered Slow, so it wasn’t a faster two hander like I hoped. It was still better in terms of damage. Taking a bit of wisdom from 5e minmaxing, pluses are better than bigger dice in terms of DPR. Since I was obsessing over making sure I had the damage to on average lay out a single HD creature, the plus one that comes with the bastard sword in conjunction with Midge’s strength mod of two is a guaranteed damage floor of four. At that point I reasoned the bastard sword two handed was the best of both worlds between the sword and two hander.

Not really. I was thinking in a vacuum. I tried this and did a lot of damage, but then I realized Midge was the party’s torchbearer because she never uses a shield. I was dropping the team’s light source when I went for that damage. So now I’m stuck with the bastard sword’s one handed d6 damage die and if I haven’t mused about this earlier, it means I need to get my hands on a +1 sword as a replacement. On the other hand, a d6 with that extra stability from a plus one is great and a higher damage floor trumps a higher damage ceiling any day in my book. I’m excited to see how this plays out the next time Midge gets stuck in
