The women of Oedo are uh… well, there’s the chipper girl who’s maybe a year or two younger than Sengoku who manages the paperwork and is treated like a child. Then there’s two incredibly powerful babes believably sold as hardcore cyberpunks who get fridged as a noir tragedy sort of thing. Goggles’ old partner I get. Love it for her when she can return fire on a VTOL blasting miniguns at her, sad to see she gets Triple Crossed By Business Bastards. She dies, Goggles carries on, but Goggles is stuck with a worse fate what with the bomb collar and false promises of reducing his sentence.
This bad bitch pictured herein implying history with Benten, who by the standards of the 90s swapped their masc and femme energies, gets a great setup (“Don’t look into the case or I will make you a statistic on the behalf of my Business Bastard Boss”), but she gets a total of one scene to write herself out of the story as a casualty. This was pretty pog in the moment, and the kind of excess I’d expect of the OVA (here’s this character with a really sick design who’s going to last for a handful of story beats, then get killed cus we can and it’ll be another year before the bubble pops), but that places her in the same ballpark of spectacle as the laser cats.
Her and Benten get to wax nostalgic, and Benten having a way with pulling people’s heartstrings like the misplaced Hideyuki Kikuchi character he is does her in, so we get the contours and implication of something impactful in the least. For the kind of character Benten is, that’s pretty par for the course.
Oh and then vampire lady. Which is not fair to her because she’s where the OVA goes from having Benten as a misplaced Hideyuki Kikuchi character to a vehicle for a Vampire Hunter D story so Yoshiaki_Kawajiri can establish his bonafides in preparation for Bloodlust.
Like everything in Oedo, I can’t say if this is good for its time or bad for its time. It’s simply of and is its time.
I mean, spoilers for an OVA in 1990, but the vampire thing always gets me. It’s the stupidest and best part of the trilogy of episodes
