I have the reverse thing with my Sunday game master. They just tried hardened statlines today and I think they were super nervous and reticent about whether they’d wipe the floor of the party while I’m like “no, no, go ahead, I’m literally built to go toe to toe with a dude who has a linear frame and a 5000eb exotic weapon (sincere)”

The party’s been at that scale for ages, and they’ve internalized the mechanics well enough, so it was high time. Today Stinger went toe to toe with a chromer sporting an automatic hand cannon. Unfortunately the crunch might’ve imposed a bit of a learning curve. We have to get back to it next week

And she met this guy blow for blow. I think the gamemaster was being a bit too sensitive by setting their attack bases at 14 (I think their defence was in that ballpark of 14-16 due to the frequency of 20 totals, but that’s kind of what you’d expect half the time). Stinger’s at chargen maximum of fourteen for her combat skills, but she can take a licking due to her dorphs

this helps me interrogate my responses to combat a bit. tanking in RED is always awful. it's not a first resort and it goes against firefight tactics. however if you're in a situation where you have to manage a miniboss enemy, that damage feels right. you've built your pc to take that damage in those circumstances

it's different from when chisato takes like multiple free hits from enemies with rifles
