i had a big post but then it died because i fuckin' hit the keyboard wrong or some shit anyways
Firebrands!
Is RP 2.
It's the basic tenants of forum RP with a bunch of guardrails to prevent some hangups, but not all of 'em.
You make a char by way of picking a faction, slapping some descriptors, and picking what you do, then what your sickass mech is.
Then, you engage in a bunch of minigames, which are basically starters.
Starters is a like, forum RP term. A block of narration/prose meant to start an RP, by way of offering an interesting scenario for someone to roll on in.
First, you all play Solitaire, a way to set up what your mecha pilot's been doing. You're given scenarios and payoffs to said scenarios that you pick out. The rebel faction can say they've been blowin' shit up and got a sickass mech out of the deal.
solitiare's meant to generate inital hooks and scenarios, ways for other players to say, "You stole a mech... what if it's one of my faction's mechs...?" and to roll with it.
Then, once you generated plot hooks and side characters and entanglements from there, you start playing the minigames.
The minigames are mechanized, procedural starters in that they have a procedure to follow, and most importantly, they have an ending.
The Chase
To play The Chase, one person plays hunter, the other plays quarry.
And the Quarry decides the tempo, sorta.
The Quarry can present Challenges to the Hunter. These are all metaphorical, shit like
"I press through a thorny briar. Follow me if you want, but throw. On
tails, you’re tangled and torn and must extract yourself, and I gain
a coin."
Thorny briar is meant to be a dangerous hazard. In the game I played, that meant guiding my Hunter through subverted AA emplacements.
The coin is the other mechanic in there, its what makes it mechanized. Someone flips, and the coin decides.
After 2 of these challenges, the 3rd round is the Quarry providing an Admission, a fuck up. These will give the Hunter 2 coins on your failure.
After a final challenge, you compare coins. If the Quarry has more coins, you dip. If the Hunter has more coins, the Quarry decides their own fate.
Other minigames
There's others. Free-For-All is a classic fight RP, where it's explicit in both its length, 2 rounds all around, then you personally decide your fate each turn.
And most importantly, this won't kill your character.
Stealing Time Away is ERP! But, loaded with conset, every action ends with a "May I?" which I find hilarious because that's the default "hey lets do this" response in the couple, goofy erp circles i rolled in.
It also had options to be like "na" and end the scene, and a little trigger for getting interrupted.
And it has a simple fade to black moment loaded in.
There's others, too. A duel which is meant to get kinda spicy, and tactical skirmish, meant to cull side characters.
thoughts
It's RP-2. Very much scales with how good you are at RP. Luckily the crew I played with was awesome, and I'm excited for the follow up session.
