I have a lot of thoughts about the closure of Cohost and I'd like to give a few of my projects like No Man's Sky Permadeath and Stardew Day a Day a proper sendoff. This is a long one so here goes nothing.
Cohost's Closure
When the impending closure of Cohost was announced it hit me pretty hard. I never really posted or interacted as much as many of you did but Cohost still felt like a cozy place that I could call home and I'm heartbroken to be losing that. When what happened to Twitter happened I just sort of shrugged and decided to move on. With Cohost closing I have genuinely cried multiple times.
I never really posted all that much but when one of my posts about Animal Crossing outfits, Stardew Valley day a day, Oxygen Not Included or No Man's Sky did severals (note: my idea of severals is three likes or a single comment) it made me happy and I will truly miss that. Another thing I will truly miss is the ability to use whatever words I want without having to dance around them for fear of bots and trolls searching them.
Like many Cohost was quite good for me in helping to detox my brain from Twitter and it will continue to influence how I approach the web and social media in the future.
My Presence On The Web
All of this has really forced me to think about my presence on the web and what it should be going forward. The only thing I immediately knew was I'm not going back to Twitter. The next thing I decided is that I should have more control over my presence online and to that end I now have two domain names, www.professoroakshell.com which I really should have set up many months ago and www.quantumzari.com where I'll be maintaining my list of links to where else you can find me and I'll be making small pages for stuff like the printable Stardew Valley calendars. I have taken the time to add the latter url to my main link on my profile and it's definitely where you should look if you are trying to find me in the future.
That still leaves the question of where I'll be posting stuff in the future though. For small stuff I've created a Bluesky account but I don't know how much I'll be posting there to be honest. I've only done two posts there so far and I already miss features we had here on Cohost. Still it's probably where you can expect me to post screenshots and comments about video games I'm playing or maybe even about light novels I've read.
For longer stuff perhaps I'll set up a blog or something over on www.quantumzari.com but without the interactions I got from people wandering across my posts by looking at tags I don't know how long I could actually get myself to do that. Perhaps I should still try but for now I'm going to leave that as a problem for future me.
I'll also still be on discord and if for some reason you need to talk to me about Professor Oakshell. Probably the best place to do so is either by messaging me or by just chatting about it on the Community Oxygen Not Included Discord as I spend a lot of time there.
Ongoing Projects
I'd like to take a moment to provide some closure of sorts to several of my ongoing projects here some of which I haven't posted about in quite some time others of which I only just recently finished.
Animal Crossings New Horizons Outfits
Back when I started here I was still posting my Animal Crossings outfits. It started out as a daily thing back on Twitter just shortly after the game released and eventually transitioned to being a monthly batch after moving here mostly due to the inconvenience of getting the images off of my Switch. I still play ACNH on a daily basis although admittedly most days I just do my routine chores, make an outfit, and perhaps talk to a few villagers. Still I've only missed playing two days in total since the game released and for those two days I retroactively made an outfit for that day. Odds are decent that I'll manage to keep playing ACNH until we get a new game on Switch 2 (I hope) unless that takes 10 years or something which I suppose is a real possibility.
Stardew Day a Day
This was my first big Cohost exclusive project and I had quite a lot of fun with it. Playing just a single day every real world day was a different experience from how the game usually plays for me as there was a lot more planning involved since I had downtime between days and I definitely gave a lot more birthday gifts than I normally would have. I was intending to start dating Emily once year three rolled around. I tried to put a few clues about that in the posts by mentioning giving gifts to Emily more often than I mentioned the others, I wonder if any of y'all picked up on that. I guess that will never have an actual conclusion as one day I was really busy in the real world and I just never got back to it. Maybe I'll continue it some day but probably not as it just won't be the same without Cohost.
No Man' Sky Permadeath
This is the only one of the projects that got to have a proper, albeit rushed, conclusion as it was ongoing at the time of the Cohost closure announcement. When the announcement happened this project suddenly had a time limit and I could no longer take the leisurely trip I had been planning. It became both a way of recognizing the reality of the situation by becoming a tribute of sorts to Cohost and Eggbug but at the same time it became a way to distract myself from that same reality by giving me a lot of work to do. I don't know if that was for better or for ill but I hope Eggbug likes their collection of glitches css crimes.
Oxygen Not Included Videos
For a while I was doing an Oxygen Not Included playthrough on YouTube and posting the episodes here. Sadly this one suffered the curse of hyperfocus where I bit off more than I could chew working at an unsustainable pace and then the hyperfocus wore off brining it to an abrupt halt. I think I might try doing some unedited content soon though, more on that in the next section.
Streaming Maybe?
Another thing that this has made me think about is that I think I'd like to make an attempt at doing a little streaming on Twitch. I don't know how long I'll have the mental energy to do so, I did burn out on doing edited YouTube content after all, but I think I still want to try for a while. Most likely I'll be playing Oxygen Not Included but perhaps I'll play some other stuff like Derail Valley or one of the various Zelda randomizers. Who knows, maybe even some Lenna's Inception speedrunning?
As far as when Saturdays are looking like when I'll have the most time at least for the near future. Probably starting at around 2 or 3 PM Central US time and going for 3 to 6 hours or so. I know it's not exactly an ideal time as quite a number of other people stream at that time too but it is what it is I suppose.
Anyway no promises on the streaming front as I'll need to wrangle my brain to get it to do that and that can prove to be quite difficult at the best of times.
Conclusions
Cohost was like a nice cozy home for me and the world will be worse off for its loss.
Wow this is definitely my longest post ever.
Finally, I'm taking one of the eggbugs with me and none of y'all can stop me.
