i think what is interesting around the recent Games and their Controversies is that 1) obviously this cultural arena has had a huge problem with hype cycles and their mechanisms for decades, but 2) the era of digital distribution (and crowdfunding, and early access...) means that anyone can claim to be making any sort of game and grab hold of the levers for those mechanisms directly through the fanspace, circumventing the checks of traditional publishers and so on, thus 3) we are seeing the emergence of an exciting new type of shovelware relying on the makers producing just the bare minimum product to not be perceived as an outright grift. going directly to the fans here is potentially very dangerous (if they turn against you as a grifter) but also potentially very useful (inasmuch as, if you hook them successfully, they will defend you and your product out of the famous Gamer Commitment to Commodity Fetishism). is this good? in a big sense, probably not! but is it sort of like seeing the shiny metal terminator skeleton of the industry slipping through mario's sloughing artificial flesh? yes
