I've seen a few VNs let you change the volume on individuals characters like that. It seems to be slowly becoming a common feature.
i saw someone claim that when they booted up the new re-release of F/SN, the male lead was muted by default
yeah that’s apparently been the default for all r/n releases, which is funny as hell
This is relatively common in vns and 18+ games but it is particularly excellent applied to Revue Starlight
I'm always vaguely amused by this menu. In particular, I love it when they have a bystander/generic/NPC volume category, and then alongside that a Male category. Sure, these faceless shadow women can be given voices, but every guy in the game must have an option to ensure you never hear a single sound from any of them.
This was particularly amusing in an older VN I saw, where the reveal that a character was a guy was spoiled about five minutes into the game if you muted male characters, since he never made a sound even if you maxed out his individual volume.
