a collection of short biographies of various notable african-american women. full of wonderful portraits, etched/drawn like these and photographs as well!
the book includes a biography of the author's late wife, mrs. lucie johnson scruggs, which is very sweet and sad.

illustration from "East of the sun and west of the moon: old tales from the north"! the illustrations, by kay nielsen, are all really wonderful.
