Edit: Locking this post because I don't feel like having this discussion anymore
I guess cohost never plans on actually implementing any kind of numbers or metrics, but I'm just like, I dont know lmao
I absolutely agree that public-facing analytics on every little aspect of every single post can have a toxic effect both on communities and individuals, and there are plenty of people who haven't quite caught on to what the general user experience of this site is intended to be... But different users legitimately have different needs.
Not all analytics are the same, not all numbers are inherently violent, and it does not have to be public-facing or a toxic presence to be useful for people who are trying to make a living being creative. We can find a compromise that seeks to avoid the toxic implementations of those tools.
Most people having the best time here are people who aren't making a living, and that's fine. If you're just here to Hang Out, then this place is fantastic. Great in ways that other options struggle at. Just Post, Just Follow People, Just Browse Tags, those are all good if you're Just Here To Hang Out. But if this place is gonna have a healthy persistent community then we also need to be viable for creatives. People who need analytics to do well here are not inherently in conflict with people who want to avoid toxic analytics.
I wanna be clear I'm not really criticizing or subchosting (god what a cursed concept...) anyone, nor am I saying people reacting against the genuinely toxic presence analytics has been used in the past are wrong for feeling that way. We can find compromises that are amenable to everyone.
