my apologies to @tesseralis, because it is a funny joke, and this post's rushed, and might come off as aggressive because it's late

but apparently a nerd-snipe into thinking about orientalism in the comments is apparently a thing that can happen, so now you all have to deal with it. oops 💙✨

ngl most of it's just footnotes though

"ruby text" is right there, and moves away from the orientalism by a bit (and there's a bit of japan-centric orientalism online too, which is something mildly discomforting 1 2.)

it's also more descriptive and useful too – the first search result in ddg for ruby text is mdn's page for <ruby> 3. that, unlike "furigana", will lead people directly to an answer to "how do I do this in cohost?" 4

  1. as someone of east asian heritage 5

  2. this isn't to say that this identity's immune points at username

  3. "ruby" is also a loanword from JPN, but it feels a bit less oriental? if 可口可乐ke kou ke le67 company was a CN-company, "coca cola" or "coca cole" wouldn't feel too oriental either?

  4. not a spectacular answer, in that it's a most unhelpful wiki page in that it doesn't actually explain much about the element's semantics other than "here's an example", but it's an answer. 8

  5. kinda wish that it'd be possible to do uni over again and take some gender studies / asian studies courses, because the language and theory would be useful! but also lived experience, etc, etc. best taken as complements, perhaps

  6. lit. "thirsty+good+happiness" or something like that; take this translation with a grain of salt because this was just done off the cuff

  7. this was an absolute masterpiece in localization; currently hating capitalism for tying this to megacorp marketing because it is so good

  8. this is probably because "something something asian thing that nobody ever uses" so nobody feels the urge to improve the LANG=en_US docs because most people don't use it! 9

  9. and this is why having a nonprofit foundation that can fund doc writers is a good thing (assuming constraints of, y'know, capitalism) because some things are public goods! like docs and mdn! it'd be nice if there was a foundation seriously invested money on improving public internet educational infrastructure 10

  10. this is probably a bit mean, but uh, there's still a mild amount of grudge because of the cuts to the FF teams working on interesting things. y'know, like servo. 11

  11. but also, capitalism, so there's bigger targets to aim at anyway. 12

  12. it's a big number's worth of issues
