does a good sword make a good wedding gift

what is the most elegant and graceful sword. the basket hilt rapier seems like the most obvious option. but i need more options, ideally ones suited for slashing as well as stabbing. my partner is getting married and if i'm getting her a weapon it ought to be one that is suited for the battlefield, not just for a civilian's duel. no katanas.

gonna say do rapier:

  • fancy, elegant, cool
  • lightweight, easy to wield at wedding
  • deep punctures are more lethal than slashes
    • easier to make a lethal puncture than a lethal slash
    • thick clothes impede slashing more than puncturing

if you really want slashing, consider adding a parrying dagger

also they do make saber style rapiers with a slashing edge

my girlfriend and i are unironically considering wedding swords instead of rings, specifically shortswords. granted, we intend on getting them possibly custom forged.

we debated rapiers but decided shortswords were better for what we wanted (display pieces on the wall but also very functional)

Spadroons, I love spadroons, they're military swords designed as a middle point between a smallsword and a broadsword. Able to both cut and thrust, often have fancy brass hilts.

Or Sideswords. Kinda like an early type of rapier with a broader blade, which makes them better at cutting. Often have similar hilts to rapiers.

if you're concerned about armor penetration, an Estoc, the precursor to the rapier. contrary to the souls games, they're a completely blunt two handed weapon. a four foot long rock solid metal punch. designed as a backup lance, it made its way to ground combat by stabbing through mail like it was rice paper and being well suited to slipping through gaps between plates.
