Started reading some t4t smut and immediately got distracted by looking up how far a parsec is (~3.2 light years) and got started on a rabbit hole of why on earth anyone would use that unit for anything but earth-based astronomy

I have decided that seeing anyone using parsecs instead of lightyears in an interstellar society is like somebody trying to use leagues to describe a distance today

You mention in the tags that you tolerate AU but there’s a measure that works very well for in a solar system: light seconds for within a planetary system (the moon is about one light second from earth!) light minutes for the inner planets (it’s 8 light minutes from Earth to the Sun) and light hours for the outer reaches (it’s about 19 light hours to Pluto.) gives you a good neat measurement system that doesn’t rely on the Earth.

Also Parsecs and AU vs Luminary Notation should be the Imperial vs Metric of any future Earth based human society I will die on that hill.

light time also have a very intuitive meaning for anyone in a place to use them: communicating with something 5 light seconds away takes at least 5 seconds to get there, or 10 seconds for a round trip. not even nice metric notation has that
