sometimes I think about how a big reason that machine-learning models are referred to as "artificial intelligence" is to ascribe them agency specifically so that the developers of models don't have to take responsibility for using bigoted or stolen data sets

reminds me of when amazon made an "AI" for hiring people and almost instantaneously ended the project when it became clear it was ultra-racist.
