Learning how to say "I am sad" has been important to me. A key part of the process has been making sure I'm surrounded by people who don't read "I'm sad" as "you need to make me feel better".

There's like this deeply embedded social norm among so many people where you never express your emotions unless it's a veiled request. If the other person doesn't read the hidden request, then they "don't really care about you". Of course, you could never request directly, because that would be "rude". Consequently, if you express emotions that don't have a "good reason" attached to them, you are in the wrong.

Dealing with all this bullshit is how my brain ended up getting a fear response any time I tell someone I'm sad and they respond with cute animal pictures to "cheer me up". Too many bad memories of "your sadness is inappropriate and needs to be corrected".

I suspect a lot of trans people have similar baggage. What is egg life after all if not a series of inappropriate and unexplainable emotions?
