I was thinking just this morning about how things like Patreon or even twitter should just be public services. Non-profit organizations, like wikipedia or archive.org, that just run for the good of the public, because they are a valuable thing to have, rather than for some corporate profit-making scheme.
Like, patreon is just not something that should exist to make money. It shouldn't have a "brand" or be ruining its business model to appeal to investors or whatever. It is a service that facilitates a relationship between artists and financial supporters.
Similarly, a lot of the ills of social media would simply not happen if it were not organized in a way to incentivize bringing out the worst in people. Right now, people on tumblr are angry at staff for proposed changes to bring in more users, which will radically change the site. Throwing old users under the bus to bring in new ones is just good business if you want to look good to investors, but terrible policy for community management.
Capitalism simply doesn't work on the internet. Every tech company is built on a foundation of sand.
